Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Appraisal Institute Continuing Education

Please Note: This is a Q&A intended to provide general information for designated members about Continuing Education (CE), but the actual rules are contained in Regulation No. 10: Continuing Education and govern continuing education requirements. The Q&A may not include all information, options, requirements, and variations applicable to any particular person.

How do I view my CE log?
To view your most up-to-date CE log or to add to your CE log, log in with your username and password and visit the My CE Log page. If you would like to have a copy faxed, e-mailed or mailed to you, please contact the Continuing Education department.

Do you accept programs from outside providers?

The Appraisal Institute will accept continuing education from outside providers if the programs meet a number of requirements.
  • The topics covered in the program must be on our list of creditable topics, which can be found here: Creditable Topics.
  • Continuing education cannot be a home study or correspondence course.
  • Offering must be at least two-hours in length.
  • For USPAP courses, the instructor must be AQB certified. The Appraisal Institute accepts USPAP up to two times per five-year CE cycle.
  • Continuing education credit will be given for up to 10 hours for each CE cycle for computer education for applications specific to the appraisal industry.
If the program meets the requirements listed above, simply log the program online from your "My Appraisal Institute" page or submit the certificate of completion to the Continuing Education department.
How do I add to my CE log?
To add to your CE log, log into your "My Appraisal Institute" page and add a program, citing the specific creditable topic. You can also fax, e-mail or mail the or certificates of completion to the Continuing Education department.
For what Appraisal Institute programs can I receive 1.25 CE credit?
The Appraisal Institute approves certain “advanced” Appraisal Institute courses, seminars and certificate programs, granting 1.25 CE credit for every hour taken for those Designated Members with cycles ending 12/31/2010 and beyond. Status reports will reflect these programs with an asterisk (*). View the current list of approved programs.
What are carry-over hours and how do I add them to my CE log?
In Regulation 10, carry-over hours are defined as creditable hours earned in excess of those required in the current continuing education cycle, which, if earned during the last six months of the current cycle; they may be carried over into the next continuing education cycle.

Carry-over hours must be entered by the Continuing Education department. Please fax, e-mail or mail your certificates of completion.
I took a course with the Appraisal Institute but it isn't appearing on my CE log. Can you help?
Programs sponsored by the Appraisal Institute, either nationally on the chapter level, will automatically be added to your CE log and should appear within one week of the offering. If a program taken through the Appraisal Institute does not appear on your CE log after one week, please contact the Continuing Education department to determine the status of this offering.
How many times in a cycle can I take a USPAP course and receive CE?
According to Regulation No. 10, the Appraisal Institute will recognize two USPAP courses within one cycle.
Do I need to take the course, Business Practices and Ethics?
Business Practices and Ethics is a requirement for continuing education each cycle. This course is available both online and in the classroom and there is no longer an exam component to either the online or the classroom versions of Business Practices and Ethics. What is the Appraisal Curriculum Overview?

How many CE hours can I take online?
All 100 of continuing education hours can be taken online.
Can I receive CE credit for service in my chapter, region or at the national level?
If your CE cycle ends on or after Dec. 31, 2010, you can receive up to 25 hours of CE for service to the Appraisal Institute. If your CE Cycle ends on or before Dec. 31, 2009 you can earn up to 21 hours of CE credit, depending on your level of service. National service will be submitted by the Chair. Chapters will submit chapter and regional service by completing the Committee Service Verification Form.
Do I need to keep my certification of completion?
Please make sure you keep any verification of attendance for each program you record in your CE Log through your previous cycle; both courses taken with AI or with other providers. The Appraisal Institute may request that you submit all documentation for programs submitted in your CE Log.

Designated members should submit all programs by December 31 in the year their cycle concludes.
